Mr. Burchfiel is an expert in biotechnology law and specializes in the biotechnology and chemical arts. His extensive practice includes litigation before the federal courts, interferences and appeals. He is the author of the definitive treatise on biotechnology patent law entitled "Biotechnology and the Federal Circuit," Bureau of National Affairs (2003). |
Mr. Chid S. Iyer, Partner, Sughrue Mion PLLC, USA |
Mr. Iyer's practice includes patent litigation involving the Hatch Waxman Act as well as electrical and computer arts. He also prepares and prosecutes patent applications in a wide variety of technologies including chemical, electrical and computer arts. He is actively involved in counseling clients in all these technical areas. He has a BTech in Chemical Engg. from IIT Bombay and advanced degrees in Chemical Engineering and Computer Science from the US, in addition to a law degree from Georgetown University. He routinely gives presentations covering all aspects of patent law and practice in various countries.

Azy S. Kokabi is an associate at Sughrue Mion and works out of the Washington office. Ms. Kokabi’s practice focuses on worldwide procurement, defense and enforcement of patents in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Specifically, Ms. Kokabi’s practice focuses on prosecution, interference, and litigation motions practice.
Ms. Kokabi has served as backup lead counsel in interference proceedings and related matters, before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Ms. Kokabi advised clients about pre-interference matters, such as provoking or avoiding interference proceedings, copying claims, and evaluating inventorship disputes. Ms. Kokabi also prosecuted patent applications covering biotechnology subject matter, and assisting in the drafting of license agreements relating to intellectual property. She also assisted in various aspects of litigation, including researching and preparing legal memoranda for pharmaceutical and biotechnology litigation.

Dr. William Simmons works out of the Washington, D.C. office of Sughrue Mion, PLLC. Will’s practice focuses on worldwide procurement, defense and enforcement of patents in the biotechnology, chemical and bionanotechnology industries. Will works in all areas of patent law, including interferences, reexaminations, oppositions and prosecution. Will prepares opinions regarding patentability and infringement and conducts freedom-to-operate analyses and advises clients regarding biosimilar (follow-on biologic) law. Will’s has extensive experience in molecular biology and molecular immunology and was a member of various collaborations including pre-Phase I clinical trials. Will has reported his results in proceedings throughout the world. |

Dr. Shiva Murthy N is currently associated with Quartesian CR Pvt Ltd, India (parent company Quartesian LLC, USA), as Director, Clinical Research and Business Development. He is the Clinical development leader in India for Quartesian and has more than 10 years experience in drug development. He has worked on more than 120 clinical projects. This experience includes conducting Pre-clinical trials, Phase 1, 2, 3 and 4 trials, BA/BE trials and Pharmaco-epidemiology projects.
Dr. Murthy has also developed clinical research departments in India for ICON, Fortis and Lotus. He has attended courses and expertise in GCP, BLS, ACLS, Clinical operations, Pharmacogenomics, Pharmacovigilance, Medical Affairs areas. He is the life member of Indian Pharmacologists Society, and official reviewer for Indian Journal of Pharmacology. He is also serving as advisory board member for Clinical Trial Magnifier, an online journal published by Clinical Trials Center, The University of Hong Kong.
